Coimbatore corporation to set up C&D waste processing unit

The civic body is looking for a suitable place, including one at Vellalore, to set up the unit at a cost of 2 crore, corporation commissioner M Prathap said.

The municipal corporation is planning to set up a construction and demolition waste processing unit.

The civic body is looking for a suitable place, including one at Vellalore, to set up the unit at a cost of 2 crore, corporation commissioner M Prathap said.

“Collection points will be set up in each of the five zones, from where the waste will be shifted to the processing centre. We are studying about the products that can be manufactured using the waste, including paver blocks,” the commissioner said. “The project will be executed using the solid waste management (SWM) fund provided to the corporation every year. 70 crore has been allotted to Coimbatore corporation this year. Out of the 70 crore, proposals have been made for around 30 crore.”

A ramp will be constructed at the garbage transfer unit on Sathy Road near Gandhipuram at a cost of 1 crore. “The ramp was damaged during construction of Gandhipuram flyover a few years ago. Garbage collected in pick-up vehicles will be transferred to trucks and carried to the Vellalore waste processing yard,” Prathap said.

“We are planning to buy 200 more pick-up vehicles using the SWM fund to collect garbage from doorsteps. We now have 105 vehicles. We will install GPS in all vehicles to monitor their movement,” the official said.

The corporation is also planning to construct a waste-to-energy plant, he added.
