CM Yogi reviews Metro expansion work at underground Chunniganj station

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the Chunniganj underground station of Kanpur Metro on Sunday to review the preparations for expanding passenger services from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central under Corridor-1 (IIT Kanpur to Naubasta).

During his visit, he visited a photo gallery set up on the station’s concourse, highlighting construction progress and also inspected a Kanpur Metro train on the platform. Managing director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRC) Sushil Kumar briefed the CM on the station’s features and the advancements of the metro system.

CM Yogi reached Chunniganj station around 11am and assessed the ongoing construction work of Kanpur Metro. A dedicated photo gallery was curated for his visit, showcasing the progress of both the metro corridors—Corridor-1 (IIT Kanpur to Naubasta) and Corridor-2 (CSM University to Barra-8).The UPMRC MD guided him through the exhibition, which prominently displayed initiatives such as worker accommodations, training programmes, health camps, water sprinkling near construction sites, and traffic management work.

A special video presentation detailed the planning and implementation of multimodal connectivity between Kanpur Central Metro Station and the railway station.

The photo gallery also featured before-and-after images of five newly developed underground stations—Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central—set to open with the passenger service expansion. Displays put up at the gallery highlighted state-of-the-art tunnel construction technology and green belt development along the metro corridor.

Additionally, the gallery also showcased passenger-centric initiatives such as metro bookings for birthdays, kitty parties, and pre-wedding shoots, cultural activities at stations, periodic book fairs, and diverse food outlets for commuters. After touring the gallery, the CM proceeded to the platform, where metro trains were stationed on both the sides. Accompanied by Kumar, he inspected the train’s interiors before departing for his next engagement.

“The CM reviewed Kanpur Metro’s expansion preparations today. The stations at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central are fully equipped for passenger services. Recently, the Chief Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) inspected the metro section from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central. With the anticipated No Objection Certificate (NOC) from CMRS, the expanded metro services may commence soon, offering relief from traffic congestion.

The metro network will connect major educational institutions, hospitals, markets, and transit hubs, significantly reducing travel time. The current journey from IIT-Kanpur to Kanpur Central, which takes approximately 75 minutes, will be cut to under 30 minutes. Metro travel will be safe, efficient, and affordable for the city’s residents,” said Sushil Kumar. The civil construction work for Kanpur Metro’s priority section (IIT–Moti Jheel) was inaugurated on Nov 15, 2019, by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Later, on Dec 28, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with CM Yogi, formally launched the passenger services for this section.
