GMC’s property tax collection up by Rs 40 crore

GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania said property tax collection under the corporation has gone up by about Rs 40 crore due to a watertight policy. “In terms of revenue collection, GMC has achieved a significant hike of 53% in property tax, 9% in trade license and 40% from its various branches.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Saturday announced a 10% rebate in property tax if paid before May 30.

GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania said property tax collection under the corporation has gone up by about Rs 40 crore due to a watertight policy. “In terms of revenue collection, GMC has achieved a significant hike of 53% in property tax, 9% in trade license and 40% from its various branches.

Overall, the corporation has collected 42% more revenue in the last financial year (FY 2022-23) as compared to FY 2021-22,” Sarania said at a presser here on Saturday.

“If taxpayers pay their dues between May 1 and May 30, the 10% rebate will be given,” Sarania said. He added that GMC’s accelerated drive to augment tax collection since December last year has paid dividends. “In 2021-22, we could collect about Rs 70 crore as property tax but this year it went up to Rs 110 crore,” Sarania said.

He added that the issuance of trade license in online mode has also increased trade license numbers to 70,127 in 2022-23 from 48,354 in 2021-22.

With regard to holding numbers, the figure has also increased from 2.5 lakh to 3.54 lakhs during the corresponding period. “During the last one-year period, GMC has also achieved significant success in linking GMC holding numbers with the APDCL consumer numbers,” he added.

At present, the council body of GMC has completed one year of its service during which it claimed to have registered a steady growth of the corporation. Sarania said it has invested in several infrastructural and developmental schemes and projects. Setting up of several garbage transfer stations, waste management projects at Boragaon and Belortol are the achievements, GMC noted.

Landfill mining of Boragaon dump-site at Guwahati as per CPCB guidelines for legacy waste disposal 2021 has been initiated by GMC at an estimated cost of Rs 172 crore.

Similarly, the civic body said the construction of compost & RDF Pant of 150 TPD (mixed municipal solid waste) at Belortol, Guwahati, has been initiated with a project cost of Rs 30.91 crore.
