Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Tuesday launched a housing scheme for registered members of the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers’ Welfare Board.
The chief minister had made an announcement earlier this year regarding a subsidy of Rs 4 lakh for registered construction workers to build their houses.
In the first phase of the scheme, over 100 beneficiaries will be covered at a total cost of Rs 400 crore and over 10,000 construction workers will benefit annually, an official release said.
The Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board was constituted to extend all possible assistance for the education of the children of the members, marriage and other welfare schemes, including the construction of houses.
Between May 2021 and October 22, welfare assistance to the tune of Rs 322 crores was provided to over 4 lakh beneficiaries. Besides, more than 7.71 lakh workers enrolled during this period.
Pon Kumar, chairman, Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board said that the government had doubled the amount for all welfare schemes.
