The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) accomplished a remarkable property tax collection rate of 88.4% by the conclusion of December 2025, marking the highest achievement for the civic body. In prior years, the tax collection rate did not exceed 80% by the end of the year.

Officials credited this enhancement to new initiatives introduced this year, which included the publication of names of significant defaulters—individuals, commercial entities, and government organizations—on the corporation’s official website.

This initiative, which was implemented for the first time, greatly increased compliance compared to previous years. The list featured the leading defaulters from both commercial and large residential sectors. Following the issuance of multiple notices and reminders, MCC adopted this public-disclosure approach to bolster revenue recovery, enabling it to achieve its highest-ever property tax collection.

Additional measures, such as engaging selected members of women self-help groups for tax collection in specific wards, conducting door-to-door collection, sending SMS alerts to major defaulters, and launching an awareness campaign encouraging taxpayers to take advantage of the 5% rebate offered in the initial months of the financial year, also played a role in the enhanced performance.

MCC recorded a collection rate of 79.06% for the corresponding period ending in December during the fiscal year 2024-25, with a property tax collection amounting to Rs 198.8 crore. In the fiscal year 2023-34, MCC reported a property tax collection of Rs 164.2 crore. MCC also dispatched mobile SMS text messages to significant property tax defaulters regarding the potential consequences of failing to clear their outstanding taxes.

There are 1,83,000 properties within the MCC jurisdiction. Property tax serves as one of the crucial revenue sources for MCC, alongside other sources such as trade license and building license fees. In an interview, MCC deputy commissioner (revenue) Somashekhar stated that the special measures and strategies, including the publication of the list of major property defaulters on its official website, were highly effective in enhancing property tax collection this year compared to previous years.

MCC targeted 100% property tax collection by the end of March for fiscal year 2025-26, he stated.

“MCC must come up with some other measures to boost its revenue by simplifying property tax collection, such as sensitising taxpayers to pay property tax like they pay water cess and power tariff bills every month without fail,” said Mohan Kumar, a resident of Vidyaranyapuram. “Besides, it must avoid taxpayers moving from pillar to post for tax payments,” he said.
