The government of Tamil Nadu, in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is preparing to construct a cloverleaf flyover on the Trichy–Madurai National Highway at Panjapur to mitigate expected traffic congestion resulting from forthcoming developments in the vicinity. These developments include a new Tidel Park and a wholesale market, as recently announced by Municipal Administration Minister K. N. Nehru.
The flyover will extend over 3.5 kilometres and will consist of six lanes. Minister Nehru confirmed that the district administration has completed the land acquisition process and has transferred the land to NHAI. The design of the structure will be modeled after the Kathipara flyover in Chennai.
Simultaneously, construction is ongoing for a four-lane semi-ring road that will link the Trichy–Madurai and Trichy–Karur highways. Officials from NHAI have verified that a detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared, with the cloverleaf design being one of the options under evaluation. Minister Nehru, who visited Trichy to inaugurate completed infrastructure and lay foundation stones for projects valued at Rs 700 million within the Trichy Corporation limits, also discussed other significant developments.
Concerning the long-awaited road overbridges (RoBs) at Maris Road near Fort Station and Trichy Railway Junction (Stage II), he stated that the work by the state government is finished, and it is now the responsibility of Southern Railway to complete their portion. He further mentioned that a metro rail proposal for Trichy is currently under consideration, with a survey scheduled to commence shortly.
In an effort to expand the city limits, the Trichy Corporation intends to incorporate adjacent village panchayats. Ward delimitation will be conducted as part of this initiative, and public objections have been solicited. Additionally, Minister Nehru laid the foundation stone for Phase II of the IBT Link Road project, which is estimated to cost Rs 680 million. This 2.1-kilometre segment includes a 1.1-kilometre elevated section that will connect Woraiyur to Kudamurutti, featuring a 10-metre-wide carriageway expected to be completed within 18 months.
