The general house of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation passed a resolution to give 50% rebate to colony residents from property tax and to increase the rebate time period given to them to pay the tax as one-time relief.
Property tax has been imposed for the first time in colonies and that too with arrears. Councillors of all political parties said that these arrears were not justified, particularly because people had not been informed on time when the tax was imposed a few years back and now suddenly, tax bills were sent with huge amount of arrears.
Aam Aadmi Party’s Taruna Mehta said that it was unjustified to impose financial burden on residents of colonies with arrears about which people were not informed. “When the tax was imposed in 2019, why is the MC sending bills now with arrears and why were residents of colonies not informed in 2019? No public notice was given to inform people, which is totally unjustified,” Mehta said.
BJP municipal councillor Saurabh Joshi moved a resolution to give 50% rebate to colony residents from property tax and increase the rebate time period to give them sufficient time to pay. Congress and AAP both supported the resolution and demanded relief for colony residents from property tax.
Municipal commissioner Anindita Mitra said since a notification in this regard has been issued by secretary, local bodies, Chandigarh administration, a resolution would be sent to them for their consideration and decision.
