Uttar Pradesh Govt offers stamp duty concession for lease agreements

On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet sanctioned a one percent reduction in stamp duty for properties valued at up to Rs one crore when purchased in a woman’s name. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting led by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Lok Bhavan in Lucknow, as stated by the UP government, which also noted that a total of 37 proposals were approved during the meeting.

Previously, this exemption applied only to properties valued at up to Rs 10 lakh, offering a maximum discount of Rs 10,000. However, the government has now expanded this exemption to properties worth up to Rs one crore. UP’s Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar provided details about the decision, expressing the government’s belief that this initiative will assist middle-class women in becoming property owners, thereby enhancing their confidence and financial independence, as well as their respect within society.

Furthermore, this exemption is expected to bolster the Mission Shakti programme, which aims to empower and promote self-reliance among women, he added. In the 2024 Budget, the central government also proposed a reduction in stamp duty for deeds executed in favor of women. The Uttar Pradesh government’s decision is viewed as a significant step in this direction. The statement indicated that there is a strong likelihood of a substantial increase in property registrations under women’s names.

The UP Cabinet has also sanctioned the proposal to allocate 10 hectares of land at no cost, with an annual lease fee of Re one, in favor of the IR Detection Technology Centre, which has been proposed by the Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), part of the DRDO. This center is set to be established in the Lucknow node of the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor.

As part of this initiative, approximately 150 engineers and technical staff are expected to secure direct employment, while over 500 individuals are anticipated to gain indirect employment.

IRDE, located in Dehradun, is a key laboratory within the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This institute is embarking on a new project aimed at creating an indigenous fabrication line for the development and production of IR detectors. The project aims to establish a manufacturing facility for semiconductor IR detectors, which will position India among the leading nations, as stated by the Uttar Pradesh government.
