Va Tech Wabag (Wabag), an Indian multinational water technology group, announced on Friday that it has secured a Rs 700 crore order from the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC). The project is multi-laterally funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) of Germany, according to a press release.
This partnership strengthens Wabag’s presence in Africa and reinforces its role as a comprehensive water solutions provider on the continent.
Under this Design-Build-Operate (DBO) contract, Wabag will undertake the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of two advanced wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Zambia—one with a capacity of 54 MLD (million liters per day) in Ngwerere and another with 19 MLD in Chunga. The 36-month EPC phase will be followed by 24 months of operation and maintenance (O&M) to ensure efficiency and long-term performance. Notably, the majority of the WWTPs’ energy requirements will be met sustainably through a combination of solar power and biogas.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to LWSC for their confidence in Wabag to deliver one of Zambia’s largest and most advanced sanitation projects in recent decades. Through this project, Wabag is proud to contribute significantly to the Zambian government’s mission to enhance water and sanitation infrastructure, positively impacting countless lives,” said Guhan Kandasamy, Head of Sales & Marketing (Africa).
