The Tamil Nadu chapter of the Builders Association of India has urged chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to take immediate steps for stabilising the prices of construction materials.
In a representation to the chief minister on Friday, Builders Association of India state chairman R Prakash said the cost of a one bag of cement had increased from Rs 80 to Rs 100, while the prices of blue metal and M Sand had spiked by anywhere between 20% and 30%.
He said the construction sector was facing an acute shortage of labourers as guest workers had left for their native places. Salaries of available labourers have shot up. The sector is under crisis after the outbreak of coronavirus, according to him.
A regulatory authority should be constituted to regulate the prices of cement to control the spiralling rates of cement, he added.
