Thiruvananthapuram to house LIFE Towers now

LIFE towers will be constructed at Karimadom under city corporation limits, Nedumangad municipality, and Varkala municipality.

Under the LIFE Mission a series of housing complexes are planned and the first one among them is to be constructed in three places in the district. LIFE towers will be constructed at Karimadom under city corporation limits, Nedumangad municipality, and Varkala municipality.

The LIFE Tower that is to be constructed in Karimadom will cost approximately Rs 4.62 crores and the fund required for 2019-2020 will be Rs 3.92 crores. The tower will be constructed on 50 cents and will have 44 units. It will also comprise of four floors and the total area would be 2,466.68 sq.m.

100 families will be provided with housing after the construction of LIFE towers in the Nedumangad municipality. It will be constructed on 138 cents and the cost of the project will be Rs 14 crores. LIFE towers at Varkala will be constructed on 319.66 cents and it will be providing housing to approximately 44 families for Rs 6.16 crore

An administrative sanction has been given by the state government for the construction of a total of 24 housing complexes in urban areas in the state, under the third phase of LIFE Mission for the people who do not own any land. The total cost is estimated to be around Rs 175 crores.

As per survey results, the total number of beneficiaries for the phase 3 project in the state is 3,37,416. The city corporation has also forwarded a list of around three plots to the state government for the construction of LIFE towers. All three plots have been around the Kattaikonam area.

Due to the lack of funds and excessively high land prices, the corporation was unable to purchase land for the construction of the apartments. The government then directed the corporation to forward the list to them. The government now needs to decide whether it can purchase the land under the LIFE Mission.

The local self-government department had earlier rejected the corporation’s plan to avail provisions of an order that offers higher land prices for the fishermen community for the purchase of land under LIFE Mission.  Around 18,000 landless beneficiaries have been identified for LIFE Mission within corporation limits.
