Tamil Nadu extends time for registration under Tenancy Act

Accordingly, landlords and tenants can register under the Act till third week of February this year.

 A Bill to replace an ordinance for extending time for registrations under the Tenancy Act was passed in the state Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

Accordingly, landlords and tenants can register under the Act till third week of February this year. Introducing the Bill, deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam, who holds housing and urban development portfolio said the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants Act, 2017 was brought into force on February 22, 2019 repealing the Tamil Nadu Buildings (Lease and Rent Control) Act, 1960.

As per sub-section (3) of Section 4 of the Act, landlord and tenant shall enter into an agreement in writing with regard to the tenancy within a period of 90 days from the date of commencement of the Act. It was extended to 365 days through promulgation of an ordinance on October 30 last year. The bill seeks to replace the ordinance.
