The Yogi Adityanath government has made a provision of Rs 747 crores for Kanpur Metro in the state’s Budget tabled in the assembly on Thursday.
This fund allocation would speed up the Kanpur Metro work. At present, the Metro runs between IIT and Motijheel on a nine-kilometre elevated track.
The nine Metro stations include IIT, Kalyanpur, SPM, Kanpur University, Gurudev, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur, LLR hospital, Motijheel.
The other stations to come up on this corridor include Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, Kanpur Central, Jhakarkati, Transport Nagar, Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Basant Vihar, Naubasta.
The Metro has been running in Kanpur since December last. The nine-kilometre stretch is just a part of the first corridor of Kanpur Metro project.
In the first corridor, the Metro will run between IIT and Naubasta. The second corridor stretches from CSA university to Barra-8.
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has already finalised that the both the corridors will be completely operational for operations by December 2023 or early 2024 (before the Lok Sabha elections).
At present, UPMRC is focussing on work between Chunniganj and Transport Nagar. On this route (part of corridor one), the Metro will run underground. Seven underground Metro stations would be constructed.
The allocation of budget for Kanpur Metro will speed up the existing work of underground station construction.
The first corridor between IIT and Naubasta is about 24 kilometers long and upon completion would connect Kanpur south and north city areas.
The second corridor between CSA and Barra-8 will also provide better connectivity between north and south city. This corridor is about eight kilometers long.
