With the extended period of rebate on property tax ending on August 31 (Wednesday), the defaulters will now have to pay a 25% penalty and 12% interest along with their property tax to the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC).
If the defaulters failed to deposit the tax amount, strict actions would be taken against them as per the norms, including the sealing of their buildings.
The civic body authority has received a whopping amount of around Rs 53.45 crore during the current financial year, till Wednesday. Of this, Rs 37.02 crore was received from commercial category properties, and around Rs 15.53 crore from the residential category properties.
Sources revealed that as of Wednesday afternoon, a total 74,176 taxpayers paid their taxes under the residential category, and 18,842 under the commercial category, taking the cumulative total to 93,018 taxpayers. These numbers might slightly increase as the E-Sampark Centres kept taking payment till late evening on Wednesday, as the rebate period ended.
Initially, the rebate period was set at two months from April 1 to May 31, but in its first-ever decision, the MC extended this period two times in a phased manner, first till July 30 and then till August 31, giving the residents five months to pay the property tax.
The number of properties falling in the tax ambit has increased from 1.14 lakh to around 1.29 lakh by adding of around 15,000 new residential properties in the tax jurisdiction, this year. Of this, around 29,000 properties are commercial, while 1 lakh are residential.
The civic body had given 20% tax rebate to the owners of residential properties
