The Panvel city municipal corporation has served prior-to-seizure notices to more than 300 property tax defaulters.

They include 101 industrial units, 107 non-residential properties and 100 residential properties. The civic body area has 3.50lakh properties. The property tax matter has reached the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has announced an amnesty scheme for property tax defaulters effective from this month.

The property tax defaulters are penalized at the rate of 2% by the Panvel civic body. The civic body has made public announcements across its jurisdiction areas. It has also launched an online payment system. So far it has recovered Rs 264 crore in the ongoing financial year.

Earlier, the Panvel municipal body had served seizure notices to 99 industrial units of Taloja and 2 of Jawahar Industrial Estate-Kamothe. Now it has targeted malls, private companies and some large housing societies among others. However, a section has been opposing the exorbitant property tax. The Panvel civic body budget 2024-25 clearly indicates that the civic body has a massive property tax outstanding. It has estimated municipal taxes for the current (next fiscal) year, outstanding municipal taxes and penalties at Rs 248 crores, Rs 1163 crores and Rs 195 crore respectively.

Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai municipal corporation announced a month-long amnesty scheme with two options. The Navi Mumbai civic body estimates to earn Rs 900 crore from the property tax from the 2024-25 fiscal year. As per latest data, it has collected Rs 520 crore property tax out of Rs 800 crore budget estimates in 2023-24. Both the civic bodies are at loggerheads with the industries in their area. The Navi Mumbai civic body is also fighting a legal battle with the industries in the Supreme Court.
