PMC approves house tax rebate for old buildings

The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has granted a 40% reduction in house tax for buildings that are over 20 years old within the urban boundaries. This decision was made unanimously during the PMC’s house meeting on Tuesday. Property owners will automatically receive the rebate without the need to submit any application or request.

This provision will take effect from April 2026. The decision is anticipated to benefit residents residing in the older sections of the city, where numerous buildings have surpassed the 20-year threshold. Areas such as Kidganj, Daraganj, Rambagh, Bairhana, Chowk, Shahganj, Kareli, Malviya Nagar, Mundera, and Chakia are among those expected to experience considerable relief once the policy is enacted.

Additionally, the house resolved to seek approval for a One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme aimed at major house tax defaulters. The municipal corporation will submit the proposal to the state government within three days. Furthermore, the house approved the revised budget for 2025-26 for both the municipal corporation and the Jal Kal department.

The revised budget for the municipal corporation was decreased by Rs 235 crore, bringing it to approximately Rs 2,100 crore. Officials noted that this reduction was primarily due to anticipated grants from the state government not being received as expected. Simultaneously, the budget for the Jal Kal department was increased by Rs 31.40 crore to enhance drinking water facilities in the city. It was also determined that officials from all municipal departments will be available in their offices daily from 3 PM to 5 PM to address ward-related concerns.

A proposal to assign gardener-cum-sanitation workers to all 100 wards under the District Urban Development Agency was also approved. Another initiative that received approval was the establishment of a digital library and an advocate hall at the municipal headquarters. To bolster civic services, the number of hearse vehicles will be increased from three to six.

Water supply works were also reviewed and preparations for the monsoon were discussed. The PMC will begin cleaning drains and sewers from April 1, with a plan to complete at least two rounds of cleaning before rains.
