Plan to develop apartments for urban poor at Panjapur

The board has requested the district administration to earmark 15 acres of land in Trichy corporation limits to develop high-rise residential towers (more than 18.30 metres tall).

Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB), formerly known as Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB), proposes to develop an affordable housing project for the urban poor at Panjapur close to the upcoming Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT). The board has requested the district administration to earmark 15 acres of land in Trichy corporation limits to develop high-rise residential towers (more than 18.30 metres tall).

Considering the employment opportunities to be generated by investments announced in Panjapur over the last two years including Olympic sports academy, truck terminal, multi-utility commercial complex and Tidel Park, officials said that such housing projects for the urban poor are essential.

“We plan to construct multiple residential high-rise towers, each with at least seven floors. On one acre, a minimum of 120 dwelling units can be constructed,” a TNUHDB official said.

The board said that the district’s largest affordable and compact housing project for economically weaker sections (EWS) and low-income groups (LIG) has been in the pipeline for about two years.

In a follow-up to the site inspection conducted by the board including minister T M Anbarasan in Panjapur and Kottapattu in July 2021, a proposal seeking land in Panjapur for developing the housing units has been submitted by the board. Sources said the application for land allocation is under the consideration of the district administration.

A comprehensive design plan including basic amenities for the Panjapur project on Trichy-Madurai national highway was completed by TNUHDB.

If it materialises, the housing project will be the third high-rise project for TNUHDB here after Vannarapettai and Jailpettai. Meanwhile, TNUHDB has said that construction works for Jailpettai Phase II (high-rise tower) near Marakkadai and Srirangam Phase II on Panjakkarai road in the city are complete.

The expansion projects in Srirangam and Jailpettai will have 106 and 64 residential units respectively. “Works for adding basic amenities are nearing the final phase, allotments will soon be made for both projects,” the official added.
