No piped drinking water in 72% homes in Madhya Pradesh

In the state, only 28.1% households have piped water as a source of drinking to their dwelling/plot/yard, showed survey. The piped water access as a source of drinking is not uniform across states because of a 32% gap in urban and rural areas.

Around three-fourth (72% approximately) households in Madhya Pradesh are without piped water as source of drinking water into their yards, dwelling, plots, revealed fifth round of National Family and Health Services.

In the state, only 28.1% households have piped water as a source of drinking to their dwelling/plot/yard, showed survey. The piped water access as a source of drinking is not uniform across states because of a 32% gap in urban and rural areas.

In urban areas, around 58.1% households have piped water for drinking while in rural areas it is only at 16.9%, showed survey.

The lower penetration of piped water connection in rural parts of state with over 70% population living in rural areas in accordance with survey. The survey was conducted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare during the 2019-21 period.

The state government had been trying to cover rural households with functional tap water connection as early as possible under the Jal Jeevan Mission, said an official.

The JJM was launched on August 15, 2019 with an aim to provide every rural home with functional tap water connection.

In MP, there are 1.22 crore households in rural areas with over 40% being connected with functional tap water as on May 29, showed the JJM dashboard maintained by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti. The dashboard further showed three districts- Panna, Satna and Chhatarpur have the lowest functional tap water connections in rural areas.

The dashboard showed only 15% rural households in Panna, followed by 18% in Satna and 21% in Chhatarpur have functional tap water households.
