NMC collects ₹272 crore property tax in FY26 so far

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has successfully gathered Rs 272 crore in property tax thus far in the financial year 2025-26, marking the highest amount in its 43-year history. Officials anticipate an additional Rs 10–15 crore to be collected over the remaining 21 days of the fiscal year.

The civic body had established a property tax collection goal of Rs 270 crore for the 2025-26 period. As per the officials, a significant factor contributing to this increase was the 15-day amnesty scheme for tax defaulters, which was in effect from February 23 to March 9, generating Rs 46 crore in outstanding dues. “During this timeframe, over 13,000 defaulters settled arrears amounting to Rs 45 crore and received waivers totaling Rs 17.37 crore in penalties,” stated an official.

The civic body typically imposes a 2% monthly interest on overdue payments along with notice charges; however, nearly 95% of these penalties were waived under the scheme. “The amnesty initiative motivated numerous property owners to resolve long-standing liabilities, significantly enhancing overall revenue. Earlier in the year, a similar scheme conducted from September 1 to December 31 had enabled the corporation to collect an additional Rs 55 crore,” the official remarked.

Civic officials noted that revenue collection was further bolstered by rebates provided to timely taxpayers — an 8% rebate for those who paid their annual tax in a single installment during April-May, and a 6% rebate for those who paid in June. “These incentives assisted NMC in mobilizing Rs 114 crore between April 1 and June 30, 2025, alone,” another official commented.

Furthermore, the municipal authority has incorporated approximately 30,000 new properties into the tax system for the current financial year, raising the total number of registered properties within NMC jurisdiction to over 600,000.

A municipal representative stated that property tax has been levied on these newly recognized properties starting from the current fiscal year, and property owners have also been instructed to remit property tax for at least the preceding two financial years, or from the year construction commenced.

This retrospective evaluation has resulted in an additional Rs30 crore over the last two years. With these properties now integrated into the official tax framework, the representative remarked. The municipal authority has the majority of properties (almost 48%) situated in the Panchavati and Cidco divisions.
