Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially launched the trial run of Metro Line 4A, which connects Thane and Mumbai, on 22 September 2025. He announced that the entire line is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with operations commencing in 2027.

The 58 km Metro Line 4 is projected to accommodate 21 lakh commuters daily, while Metro 4A alone is anticipated to serve 13 lakh passengers. The first phase, which spans 10.5 km between Cadbury Junction and Gaimukh in Thane, is scheduled to open by December 2025. This line will feature 32 stations, and the trains on Metro 4A will consist of six coaches, stopping at significant locations such as Majiwada and Kasarvadavali.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde described the launch as historic, as it marks the introduction of the first metro service in Thane after 172 years of railway operations.

Additionally, the government has sanctioned Metro loops to enhance connectivity throughout the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), linking areas such as Kalyan-Dombivali and Wadala-CST, thereby improving last-mile connectivity for commuters.
