The project to complete the missing link of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Lonavala is approaching its final stages, providing much-needed relief to commuters who frequently encounter significant traffic, particularly on weekends and during festive periods.
This 13.3 km segment, which traverses hills and valleys, is set to cut travel time between Mumbai and Pune by as much as 30 minutes. The initiative features two tunnels (measuring 8.9 km and 1.7 km) and two cable-stayed bridges, alleviating congestion caused by the narrow roads and tourist influx in Lonavala.
The viaduct that connects the tunnels posed one of the most formidable challenges, but it has now been successfully completed. The missing link is anticipated to be operational soon, with final adjustments and lane expansions near Khopoli.
Originally slated for completion in May, the project is now expected to be fully functional by March 2026. Once operational, the Lonavala bypass will shorten the travel time between Mumbai and Pune to approximately 2.5 hours, thereby enhancing travel convenience.
