Kanpur Metro for the first time successfully completed a test run from Motijheel to Kanpur Central station on Tuesday. The test run was conducted on both the up-line and down-line tracks. Senior Metro officials were present on the occasion .
This marks a major step forward in preparations for the extension of passenger services from IIT to Kanpur Central, set to launch in Jan 2025. Regular trial runs on this route will commence soon, with work at all stations from Motijheel to Kanpur Central progressing at a rapid pace.
The Kanpur Metro, which is presently operated on the elevated viaduct, will soon ferry passengers to its underground stations for the first time. In July this year, a test run was conducted on the up-line, extending to the Nayaganj underground station, and in October, the down-line was tested. After the installation of tracks, third rail systems, signals, and other necessary infrastructure on both lines up to Kanpur Central, the metro train was taken to Central Station for a test run. During this run, various systems, including tracks and power supply, were tested.
Additionally, the third rail installed parallel to the metro track was charged for the first time up to Central Station. It is important to note that Kanpur Metro currently operates on the Priority Corridor from IIT to Motijheel, which includes a total of nine elevated stations. With the extension of the metro route to Kanpur Central in January 2025, five additional stations-Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj, and Kanpur Central-will be integrated into the network. These stations will be underground.
