MCD’s Suniyo property tax scheme nets ₹304 crore in three months

In a span of merely three months, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) Suniyo property tax amnesty initiative has successfully amassed Rs 304 crore, which is over three-and-a-half times the revenue generated by the previous scheme.

The Suniyo (Sampatti Kar Niptan Yojana) initiative, set to conclude on September 30, has also experienced an increase in the number of taxpayers. Data indicates that a total of 1,02,142 individuals made payments under Suniyo during the first three months of its implementation, in contrast to only 38,805 who participated in the Samriddhi scheme launched in 2022-2023.

According to a senior official from the MCD speaking to PTI, the Suniyo scheme has raised more than three-and-a-half times the funds collected under the earlier Samriddhi scheme, which garnered merely Rs 84.23 crore during the same timeframe in 2022-23. This represents an increase of over 63,000 taxpayers and a remarkable 163.22 percent growth in participation.

In June 2025, the inaugural month of the Suniyo scheme, collections amounted to Rs 96.28 crore, comprising Rs 35.30 crore from residential taxpayers and Rs 60.98 crore from commercial taxpayers. The total rose to Rs 150.57 crore in July, while August saw collections of Rs 58 crore from taxpayers participating in the scheme. The MCD’s dashboard has also provided zone-specific data regarding performance. The Narela zone topped the list with collections of Rs 44.8 crore, followed by Karol Bagh (Rs 28.69 crore), MCD headquarters zone (Rs 25.78 crore), South zone (Rs 24.78 crore), and City SP zone (Rs 24.36 crore).

Significant contributions were also made by Keshavpuram, Shahdara (South), Shahdara (North), West, and Central zones, each surpassing the Rs 20-crore threshold. The Rohini zone generated Rs 16.27 crore, Civil Lines Rs 13.68 crore, and Najafgarh Rs 12.97 crore, which recorded the lowest number of taxpayers, although its revenue remained noteworthy.

Regarding the number of taxpayers, the West zone led with 12,623 properties paying tax, closely followed by Shahdara (South) with 12,321 and City SP with 10,990. Rohini, Keshavpuram, Shahdara (North), and Karol Bagh also demonstrated strong participation, while the zone.

MCD officials said the growth under Suniyo could be attributed to greater awareness, citizen outreach, and the ease of digital payment options, which have significantly reduced issues like cheque bounce.

The civic body believes the scheme has not only boosted collections but also widened the taxpayer base by bringing more property owners into the net.
