MC seals 11 properties for non-payment of taxes

The enforcement wing of the civic body here on Monday went on to seal 14 properties, but three out of them paid the property tax on the spot and were let off.

The Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has sealed 11 properties which have defaulted in payment of property tax. The enforcement wing of the civic body here on Monday went on to seal 14 properties, but three out of them paid the property tax on the spot and were let off. All the properties were sealed in phase 3-A market, said the MC Commissioner Navjot Kaur.

She said that in total, MC will seal 20 properties in phase 3-A (all booths) owing approximately Rs 7 lakh property tax and the three property owners paid Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000 in total to get their properties regularised.

Kaur added “MC is yet to recover approximately Rs 13 crore as property tax from various defaulters, residential or commercial or governmental. Here in phase 3-A, we were to recover property tax from 20 booths since 2016. The sealed 11 both owners are to pay approximately Rs 3.5 lakh. MC will later also calculate the property tax according to the declaration made by the person operating the booth and if the operator is a tenant then the amount of property tax will be increased.”

For the 2022-23 fiscal, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has surpassed the property tax collection target declared in the budget. This financial year MC has collected Rs 1.95 cr excess against targeted property tax of Rs 22 cr in 2022. MC has collected a total of Rs 23.95 crore property tax by December last year, with three months still to go for the financial year to end.

The Budget of Property tax for the current financial year is Rs 22 crore approved by the government and collection is Rs 23.95 cr till December 2022 as the budget target has been achieved. It is a record achievement for MC Mohali. Last year, till the same period, the collection was only Rs 14.25 crore which this year is commendable, said the MC Commissioner Navjot Kaur.

However, MC is still to collect Rs 13 crore of property tax from various defaulters in Mohali.
