The fund-strapped municipal corporation (MC) has managed to fetch Rs 74 crore in property tax till Thursday, which is Rs 26 crore more than last year’s collection.
Going by the heavy rush of people at MC’s suvidha centres, the officials are expecting to collect at least Rs 80 crore tax till September 30, this year. The officials claimed that there are multiple factors for good recovery this time and they expect they would achieve more than Rs 100 crore, this financial year.
The residents have a chance to avail a 10% rebate on the property tax till September 30, therefore rush is seen at the MC suvidha centres, at least before the lunch hours.
The officials claimed that they have recovered Rs 74.59 crore, and as of now 2.19 lakh people have filed their returns. The maximum recovery has come from zone-D, where Rs 34.25 crore has already been recovered till now.
Interestingly, about 28% people have opted for online tax payment, as 61,675 returns were filed online and Rs 23.21 crore came through digital payments. Last year till September 29, people had filed 41,423 returns online and Rs 17.15 crore was recovered from property taxes, online.
One of the officials claimed that they are organising camps in various areas for collection of taxes, and in the last two years due to depression in the market, people did not have good income and they did not get the rents from their rented buildings. He added that cancer cess has also been added to the total property tax, so the tax amount has also increased a bit.
Talking about the taxes received so far, MC superintendent Abdul Satar said, “We are generating good revenue and we are hoping to cross Rs 80 crore after September 30. People have a chance and they should clear their dues and avail 10% rebate, and after that, they will have to pay the entire amount.”
