Kanpur Municipal Corporation(KMC) is manufacturing interlocking tiles using construction and demolition waste seized during raids and drives.
The manufacturing facility established in Panki Bhau Singh became operational on Thursday and made approximately 2,500 tiles.
Nodal officer of the project, Divakar Bhaskar, disclosed that KMC had invested Rs 80 lakh in this initiative and delegated operations to Hindustan Dock yard company.
KMC will receive proceeds from the interlocking tiles’ sales. Municipal commissioner, Sudhir Kumar, told media thatthe facility was fully functional with a daily capacity to process 150 tonnes of C&D waste. The tiles will be marketed through tender proceedings and manufacturing cost will be calculated before establishing the retail prices.
He elaborated that residents disposed of construction waste along roadsides during house construction, escalating pollution levels and impeding regular traffic flow.
This waste proves particularly hazardous, significantly elevating pollution levels. The heightened presence of PM 2.5 in construction waste poses respiratory concerns.
