Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has identified as many as 2,700 dark spots in the city where it will install streetlights. For the installation work Rs 12.5 crore has been released under the Central government’s ‘Safe City’ project.
Approved by the Union ministry of home affairs in 2018, the ‘Safe City’ project aims at strengthening safety and security of women in public places.
The areas have been identified near women colleges, schools, coaching institutions, model shops and some prominent stretches in several localities, including Gomtinagar Extension, Shingarnagar, Saadatganj, Para, Aliganj, Madiaon, Kursi Road and Gautampalli.
Municipal commissioner Ajay Dwivedi said, “Placing streetlights in these areas will ensure safety for both women and men commuting at night.”
