Secretary to state highways and minor ports department R Selvaraj on Friday inspected major road projects taken up by different wings of the state highways department in Trichy district.
The highways secretary carried out inspections to ascertain the quality of ongoing road widening and bridge projects in Trichy city and Lalgudi.
The senior official inspected a Rs 17.2crore project for strengthening and widening the 1.2km-long highway connecting Crawford and E Pudur areas in Trichy city with the upcoming integrated bus terminus (IBT) in Panjapur on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway (NH).The state highways department (national highways wing) will widen the existing two lanes of the highway (SHU 132) into four lanes with a median under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme 2023-24.
The secretary inspected the material quality and physical dimensions of the road to ensure that work was being carried out as per the actual plan.
He checked the retaining walls constructed on a section of the road abutting the river Koraiyar.
“A tender will be floated to widen the bridge across the Koraiyar. The bridge has only two lanes now. Land acquisition has to be completed to develop a four-lane bridge,” an official source said.
A team of senior highways department officials, including chief engineer M Panneerselvam, accompanied the secretary to inspect a high-level bridge being built across the river Uppar near Lalgudi town.
With the support of Nabard funds, the new bridge is being built at Rs 3 crore by the highways department as a replacement for a causeway.
