Gujarat CM inaugurates Rs 550 crore Atal Smart City in Rajkot

The ‘Atal Smart City’, built in Raiya under the Smart City Mission of the central govt, was inaugurated by chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday. The robust infrastructure, with all modern facilities, was created in TP scheme number 32 at a cost of Rs 550 crore.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) believes that around four lakh people will come to reside in this area.

The ‘Atal Smart City’ is spread over 930 acres of land. The project started on Aug 23, 2019 and was completed on Nov 19, 2024.

There is private land around the smart city. A total of 50 plots are reserved, out of which four are for residential purposes, six for commercial purposes, seven for social infrastructure, and 26 are reserved for gardening. The natural drains in the smart city area have been retained, and in order to save them from encroachment, tree plantation has been done on both the sides. Thanks to the power duct, the electricity supply will have no overhead lines. This will allow RMC to run double-decker buses on the roads in the future.

The roads are designed with widths ranging from 18 metres to 60 metres, considering future transport planning. The robust infrastructure will make water leakage and electricity theft a thing of the past.

The key features of the smart city

Road Network: RMC has developed a total integrated road of 18.21km. RMC claims that these roads will become an example for smart roads in all other smart cities in the country. As a part of the Mass Transport System (MTS), RMC has developed a BRTS corridor of 8.51km, on which 15 sophisticated BRTS bus stops have been developed.

24/7 Potable Water Supply, Recycled Water System: RMC has laid two water lines — one is a potable water line, and the other is a recycled water line. It is expected that by providing recycled water, it will save 30% of potable water. The infrastructure was created to provide 24-hour water supply. For recycled water, a 56 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) has been set up. In order to treat this water further, a tertiary treatment plant has also been set up.

Storm Water Drainage System: The design to conserve rainwater has been made considering the topology of the entire area and natural waterway. The storm water drainage system has been developed in a way that each drop of rainwater is conserved and transported to Atal Sarovar 1 to 3.AdvtPower Duct, Utility Duct: Special RCC ducts have been installed on the roads for 66KV power cable and optical fibre network in order to ensure that in the future there is no need to dig up the road for any maintenance work.

Cycle Track, Footpath: A 14km cycle track on both sides of the road, with a width of 24 metres, has been created, with footpaths on both the sides.
