First Monsoon of Uttar Mumbai Slum Dwellers who moved to new redeveloped flats in recent past have stories to tell how their lives changed for better in these Pakka homes. They are especially relieved of and free from massive difficulties caused by rains in Jhuggis. Beneficiaries no longer have to deal with rain water gushing in from streets as also from leaking roofs, and are not required to spend sleepless nights and anxious days during rains. Their belongings and themselves, especially their wards-kids and elderly, now feel a deep sense of security in these homes. Ownership of pakka dwelling units has brought dignity & security with essential amenities like washrooms, kitchens and access to clean water, elevating their living standards significantly.
This situation has come about thanks to the efforts of their Lok Sabha Member of Parliament from Uttar Mumbai & Union Minister Shri Piyush Goyal ji, CM Maharashtra, local BJP Leadership & MLAs, and authorities like SRA, BMC, etc. who have accelerated long stalled SRA projects for construction & redevelopment of the homes/flats for the slum dwellers in Uttar Mumbai under Shri Goyal’s initiative to transform Uttar Mumbai into Uttam Mumbai.
These significant developments towards transforming the quality of life for Uttar Mumbai slum dwellers, are part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s larger vision to ensure that no family in India is left without a dwelling unit equipped with basic infrastructure such as sanitation, water supply, and electricity in a clean and sustainable environment. The NDA Government under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership has made remarkable contributions in the past 11 years, towards improving lives of common citizens in particular and those without homes in particular.
It is noteworthy to hear Voices from the Ground what Beneficiary citizens in Uttar Mumbai have to say in this regard :
Now I Enjoy the Rain!
We used to live near a river that would flood every monsoon, bringing water into our homes. Every year, we feared the rains. But thanks to the efforts of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and
MLA Yogesh Sagar, we now have a safe and secure home in Mumbai. No more flood water gushing into our homes. Thanks to new home, now the situation is much much better, especially in the light of massive difficulties which rains causes for life in Jhuggis

From Slums to Permanent Homes
I have been living in this slum since childhood. Life was difficult, but now we have received good, safe, and permanent homes through the SRA project. This was made possible due to the tireless efforts of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and MLA Yogesh Sagar. Today, our homes have spacious rooms. There is ample space for children to play. Now, even our relatives visit us happily. Not only that, but our children’s marriages are also getting fixed — because now we have our own permanent house. For this, I sincerely thank Piyush Goyal and Yogesh Sagar. They have truly transformed our lives.
— Keshan Davanpalli, Resident, Jai Santoshi Maa SRA Society, Kandivali (West) Exile Ended – Now We Too Have a Permanent Home
Earlier, we used to live in a small room. It was extremely difficult to live in such a small space with my husband and three children. When we lived in a chawl, every monsoon was like a disaster — rainwater would seep into the house, and we had to spend many sleepless nights. But now, with the new home we’ve received, it feels like our ‘exile’ is over. In this new home, we have a large hall and a beautiful bedroom. Along with that, we’ve received several other amenities, which earlier felt like just a dream. All this has been possible only because of the efforts of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Yogesh Sagar. Our lives have truly changed because of them, and for that, I am sincerely grateful.

We used to live in a slum without a permanent roof. During the rainy season, water would accumulate, turning the area into a muddy mess. Basic amenities like clean water and sanitation were also lacking. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and local MLA Manisha Chaudhary, we have been freed from those difficult conditions. Today, we live in a safe and well-constructed home under the SRA scheme. – Ashok Gupta, Local Resident, Janakalyan Housing Society, SRA Shantinagar, Dahisar (East).
From Filthy Water to a Well-Equipped Home
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Union Minister Piyush Goyal, MLA Yogesh Sagar, and other concerned authorities, our long-awaited dream of owning a house has finally come true. Initially, we were going to be given a building located at the back. But special attention was given to us, and we were allocated a building right by the roadside — this is a very big deal for us. When we lived in the chawl, during monsoons, filthy water would overflow on the streets. Drains would
spill over, and we had to walk through that dirty water daily. All that discomfort and trouble is now permanently gone. Today, we can proudly say that we too are ready to live a clean, safe, and dignified life.

The redevelopment of slums in Uttar Mumbai has gained real momentum with completion/handing over of around 1800 residential flats, in the recent past, for the families from slum areas of Uttar Mumbai.
Recently, the Jay Santoshi Maa Housing Society’s SRA project in a Village at Shivaji Road, Kandivali West, was inaugurated, with 150 beneficiary families receiving keys to their new homes. Several other projects including around 270 dwelling units at Laxmi Krupa SRA Project at Babrekar Naka and around 40 units at Shivshakti, Kandivali Gaothan, have been constructed/handed over.
Additionally, in October 2024, under the SRA scheme, more than 1000 beneficiaries were allotted new homes in Janakalyan Nagar, Dahisar East.
Around 300 dwelling units have also been completed/handed over under Slum Rehabilitation scheme in Malad area.
A long-pending project in Devipada, has now been restarted with the intervention of Piyush Goyal. To ensure timely development and swift resolution of challenges/issues, progress reviews are being held periodically. Eligible residents have also begun receiving rental compensation.
As an empowering tool and to accelerate slum rehabilitation, residents of stalled projects are now empowered to select their own developer or opt for self-redevelopment, with complete transparency and without political interference. Union Minister Piyush Goyal is overseeing entire process.
Actions including blacklisting of defaulting developers have also been initiated and re-development through various modes is being persuaded vigorously.
Commenting on impactful and empowering initiatives in SRA projects, Goyal said: “The steps towards making Uttar Mumbai slum-free will be remembered as historic. I am truly delighted that the dream of owning a permanent home is becoming a reality for hundreds of families in North Mumbai. It is not just about housing but about building a healthier, safer and more dignified living environment for slum residents.
Further, with the goal of quality life for citizens, Piyush Goyal has also directed the authorities saying:
“For residents to lead better/quality life; no new slums should be allowed to come up in North Mumbai. Strict action must also be taken against illegal constructions.”
