The municipal corporation (MC) has prepared a rough financial estimate of Rs 1.25 crore to convert the functioning of the construction and demolition (C&D) waste plant from manual to mechanical.
The decision was taken following a presentation on September 16 to increase the output of the plant in the city by collecting maximum raw material of the C&D waste for preparing concrete items through automation. The engineering department of the MC will further use these items in multiple works.
“With the mechanical system, the plant will be able to generate more items daily. The UT administration has already approved a draft C&D waste policy, penalising illegal dumping of this kind of waste. We are expecting a good quantity of C&D waste from different parts of the city. This will increase our output significantly,” sources said.
The UT will give various options to residents to bring C&D waste to its plant in Industrial Area. The charges and transportation modes — private or government —will be finalised after receiving objections and suggestions from public. The UT is aiming not only at the C&D waste of Chandigarh but also of Panchkula and Mohali.
Adviser orders: MC commissioner
Municipal commissioner Anindita Mitra said a plan to convert the functioning of the construction and demolition (C&D) waste plant of the city from manual to mechanical through an automatic system has been prepared following the directions of the UT administrator and adviser. The matter will be brought and discussed in the monthly general house meeting of the MC for its approval, she added.
‘C&D waste plant was model unit’
Sources said, “After processing the raw material, the machines produce recycle aggregates such as stones, gravel, and mix of debris to make concrete and related material. The recycled concrete goes into making tiles, curb channels, and paver blocks, which the municipal corporation uses in different works.”
Silt, one of the by-products, can be used to carry out filling jobs on construction sites. Last year, the plant was selected as a model unit in the country and former municipal commissioner K K Yadav was called for a presentation in Visakhapatnam to the Smart City project representatives of various cities.
