Electric vehicles charging stations must for 500 new buildings

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has made it mandatory for the residential buildings with at least 25 flats to have one charging point for the electric vehicles (EV) as part of the measures to promote its use.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has made it mandatory for over 500 under-construction residential buildings with more than 25 flats each to have charging stations for electric vehicles (EV). If a building houses 100 flats, it should have four EV charging stations. Earlier, it was voluntary for buildings to have EV charging stations.

Over 500 residential buildings under construction with more than 25 flats each will have charging stations for electric vehicles.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has made it mandatory for the residential buildings with at least 25 flats to have one charging point for the electric vehicles (EV) as part of the measures to promote its use. If a building houses 100 flats, then the number of EV charging stations will be four.

Earlier, it was voluntary for the buildings to have EV charging stations. The town planning department of the NMC, which carries out the building plans approval process for the city, have made it mandatory for the new buildings to make provisions of EV charging stations.

Sanjay Agrawal, executive engineer of the town planning department, said, “We will check whether the buildings have set up EV charging stations to facilitate the dwellers while giving the building completion certificates. We are giving permission to the building plans against conditions that they will set up the EV charging stations.”

He said, “At present, around 500 building projects, with over 25 flats each, are under construction in the city. We will issue the building completion certificates only if the EV charging stations are installed on the premises.”

The NMC has recently framed its policy for procuring electric and CNG vehicles for various purposes. The new policy has come into effect from the current financial year.

Ravi Mahajan, president of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India’s (Credai) Nashik chapter said, “This is really a good move by the NMC. In fact, the idea was floated by Credai-Nashik. There’s no doubt that electric vehicles will be the future. Keeping this in mind, the builders have started making provisions of EV charging stations on the building premises. Builders are also making such provisions at smaller buildings with less that 25 flats.”

Jayesh Thakkar, senior office-bearer of the National Real Estate Development Council (Naredco), Nashik, said, “There has been a rise in the sale of electric two-and four-wheelers in the city. There have been some devices available in the markets where a bike owner, who charges the EV battery of vehicles on the building premises, will pay as per the power consumption. Hence, other residents of the buildings, who do not have EVs, will not have to pay the power bills for the charging stations.”
