In an effort to address the severe and ongoing traffic issues in South Delhi, the Delhi government has proposed the construction of four elevated roads. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been assigned to conduct feasibility studies for the proposed corridors.

The planned stretches aim to ease vehicular congestion and improve connectivity in high-traffic areas. The routes under evaluation include: a link between main Chhatarpur Road and SSN Marg; an elevated stretch from Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road to the IGNOU Gate; a corridor along IGNOU Road; and a longer connection from Anuvrat Marg to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, passing through INA Market.

Officials from the PWD noted that several residential areas like Freedom Fighters Enclave, Sainik Farm, and Saidulajab have faced prolonged connectivity issues due to consistent traffic bottlenecks. IGNOU Road, in particular, is a vital route for thousands of daily commuters connecting neighborhoods such as Neb Sarai, Paryavaran Complex, and Freedom Fighters Enclave to the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and Saket Metro Station.

The road, however, is flanked by commercial structures, shops, and informal street vendors, leaving little scope for traditional road widening. Previous measures such as the use of concrete barriers to streamline lane flow have failed to significantly ease traffic.

One of the key projects under consideration is a 2-km elevated road from Chhatarpur’s 100-Foot Road to IGNOU Gate. This stretch is expected to divert a significant load of traffic heading towards Qutub Minar and Gurgaon. Another plan involves the construction of a flyover at the busy Chhatarpur Road–SSN Marg junction, which frequently sees gridlock.

The most ambitious of the four projects is the proposed corridor from Anuvrat Marg to IGI Airport. While still in early conceptual stages, this route could provide a seamless link from South Delhi to the airport and central areas such as INA Market.

Officials have emphasized that these plans are at a preliminary stage. Detailed feasibility studies will involve consultants and require field inspections by teams including PWD engineers, local MLAs, traffic police, and other stakeholders.

With these projects, the Delhi government aims to provide long-term relief to commuters in one of the city’s most densely populated zones, where urban growth has outpaced infrastructure planning. The outcome of these feasibility studies will determine the final blueprint and timeline for implementation.
