Delhi civic body extends property tax amnesty scheme SUNIYO till Feb 28

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi announced on Monday the extension of its property tax amnesty program ‘SUNIYO’ until February 28, 2026, encouraging property owners throughout the capital to step forward and settle their long-overdue dues, as the late fee remains fixed at 5 percent, according to officials.

Under the Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana (SUNIYO), taxpayers can receive a full waiver of property tax, interest, and penalties for all years prior to 2020-21, provided they pay the principal tax for the current financial year (2025-26) along with the previous five fiscal years.

Describing it as a golden opportunity, Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh urged citizens to regularize their tax records while the opportunity is available. He noted that the initiative has already assisted lakhs of residents in settling their arrears without the burden of penalties or interest. “We encourage all property owners and occupiers to take full advantage of this opportunity and resolve their outstanding property tax dues without incurring penalties or interest,” Singh stated.

As per the mayor’s office, the response to the scheme has been substantial, with 1,78,923 taxpayers already participating, contributing Rs 1,032.91 crore in property tax collections as of February 1. Of this amount, Rs 200.45 crore was collected from 1,28,802 residential properties, while Rs 832.45 crore was gathered from 50,121 non-residential properties, according to officials.

Significantly, 96,169 first-time taxpayers have entered the tax net under SUNIYO, contributing Rs 367.26 crore, they reported. In total, Delhi’s property tax collection for the current financial year has reached Rs 2,828.49 crore from 12.62 lakh taxpayers, representing a notable increase compared to the Rs 1,908.06 crore collected from 10.43 lakh taxpayers during the same period last year, indicating a 48.24 percent rise in revenue and a 20.99 percent increase in the number of taxpayers, officials stated.

The total collection for FY 2024-25 amounted to Rs 2,132.29 crore, highlighting the effectiveness of the amnesty scheme, they added.
