As the Chandigarh municipal corporation has been tightening the noose over all the property tax defaulters of all the categories across the city, the civic body authority has sent approximately Rs 26 lakh property tax notice to the Income Tax (IT) department of the central government.
Since this is the first notice to the MC, they have been given sufficient time and asked to deposit the tax amount by October 31 to the authority.
According to information, the tax branch of the Chandigarh municipal corporation had conducted independent survey of the IT building first to measure the constructed as well as non-constructed areas and know the exact amount of the property tax.
Since, this is the new government building, the civic body authority did not possess any record of the same and other related issues to calculate the property tax amount of the building.
“Ideally, the department has to submit the required record and related documents to the tax branch of the MC under the self-assessment scheme, but the IT department did not inform anything to the tax branch of the MC. It was tax branch’s intimation, through which they conducted the survey and brought the department under the tax ambit. Therefore, the IT department will also have to deposit some penalty and interest amount as per the laid down tax norms,” said sources in the municipal corporation.
Sources in the civic body authority revealed that though they have started giving property tax notices to all the categories falling in the tax ambit, but since the commercial properties and government offices owe majority of the tax amount, these two categories are being focused more to incur maximum amount from them.
