Chandigarh civic body seals three shops over unpaid property tax

Following the directions of municipal commissioner Anindita Mitra, a team of property tax wing of the civic body authority took action against property owners, who had not cleared Rs 7.21 lakh in taxes.

The Chandigarh municipal corporation on Friday sealed three commercial properties in Industrial Area Phase-1 for non-payment of property tax.

Following the directions of municipal commissioner Anindita Mitra, a team of property tax wing of the civic body authority took action against property owners, who had not cleared Rs 7.21 lakh in taxes. All these commercial properties were situated inside the Centra Mall.

Shop number 3 owed Rs 3.2 lakh in property tax, shop number 5 owed Rs 2.9 lakh and shop number 12 had pendind dues of Rs 1.3 lakh. These properties had not paid the tax since 2009 and 2010.

The property tax branches of the Chandigarh municipal corporation had given multiple chances to these defaulters to pay the tax.

“The attachment orders of properties had been issued by the MC to the defaulters of property tax and sufficient time had been given to deposit the tax within 15 days from the date of pasting of attachment notices,” sources said.

Sources said the MC had issued 58 attachment notices till September 19 with properties owing Rs 1.25 crore in taxes. A total of 26 properties have neither deposited the property tax nor given any representation.
