Chandigarh civic body collects Rs 58.6 crore property tax

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has collected Rs 58.6 crore property taxes for the financial year, which is nearly Rs 3 crore higher than the previous fiscal year (2023-2024). Officials indicated that this amount may increase, as the taxes from the e-Sampark centres in the Union Territory have not yet been accounted for.

Out of the total revenue collected thus far, a significant portion, amounting to Rs 42 crore, originated from commercial properties, while the remainder was derived from residential properties. This total includes some pending arrears as well as payments for the current financial year. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the municipal body had collected Rs 55.59 crore in property taxes.

According to sources from the Municipal Corporation, the tax imposed on commercial properties is considerably greater than that on residential properties, resulting in the highest annual revenue collection from the former. Besides, many properties are still under litigation, so large amounts of arrears are still pending, they added.

Of the 1.42 lakh properties in the UT as per FY 2024-25 records, 1.12 lakh are residential and the remaining 30,000 are commercial holdings. This financial year has seen the addition of new properties following a physical survey conducted by the Municipal Corporation, the majority of which are residential in nature.
