Chandigarh civic body begun to transform property tax files into digital mode

Out of around 1.20 lakh files of both residential and commercial properties, over 15,000 are already digitised. Not only documents, details of taxes paid and arrears, will be maintained digitally by the tax branch of the civic body.

The municipal corporation (MC) has begun converting its property tax branch into e-office, transforming documents of each property within the ambit of tax into digital mode.

Out of around 1.20 lakh files of both residential and commercial properties, over 15,000 are already digitised. Not only documents, details of taxes paid and arrears, will be maintained digitally by the tax branch of the civic body. The changeover will take time as the number of the files is high and manpower limited.

“Each digital file has a unique number to help employee or officer access it. This exercise will not only reduce the manual work but also maintain the secrecy of files. As the move is for both commercial and residential properties, their property tax, mode of calculation and other details will be kept in a manner so that they are easily manageable digitally instead of manually,” an official said.

The civic body has asked people to update their mobile numbers and mode of contact to provide timely information. Sources said many contact numbers were either not working or responding. The MC will soon start sending information to taxpayers .
