In a recent survey, 980 illegal constructions have been identified across the city, BBMP told the high court on Monday.

While south zone has the highest number of illegal constructions at 274, Dasarahalli has only 3. Among other zones, 176 illegal constructions were identified in Mahadevapura, 136 in Yelahanka, 108 in east, 92 in Bommanahalli, 103 in Rajarajeshwarinagar and 88 in west zone. The survey was conducted in response to the high court’s September 19 order in connection with a suo motu PIL.

The Palike claimed that though it has adequate staff, there are other jobs to do — clearance and transportation of garbage, asphalting and whitetopping of roads and drainage-related work. Hence, the task of initiating action and demolishing illegal constructions is lagging, it admitted.

Further, BBMP is yet to get its own police force and squad for preventing illegal constructions and the KMC Act which governs the agency, doesn’t provide for seizure of construction material and stoppage of illegal construction work which is in progress.
