This initiative is in line with the global campaign ‘Ending Plastic Pollution’ and is strategically scheduled prior to World Environment Day on June 5. The AMC intends to experiment with the incorporation of single-use and multi-layer plastics in asphalt, with the goal of minimizing plastic waste and improving road durability.
Municipal engineers have been directed to carry out trials to evaluate the practicality and advantages of this method. This effort is part of a larger strategy aimed at tackling plastic pollution within the city.
The AMC has implemented various measures, including stricter enforcement of the plastic ban at the ward level and public awareness initiatives that promote eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth bags, glass bottles, and recyclable containers. Furthermore, the AMC is establishing bottle banks to gather empty cold drink and mineral water bottles, providing incentives for residents who return them. A campaign focused on solid waste segregation is also in progress, accompanied by stringent penalties for littering in public areas.
Educational seminars and essay competitions are being organized in schools to enhance awareness regarding the hazards of single-use plastic. Tree planting activities will be conducted to commemorate World Environment Day, and routine inspections at bus terminals will ensure adherence to the plastic ban. Despite a five-year-old prohibition on plastic bags under 120 microns, single-use plastic remains a considerable challenge. The AMC is optimistic that these renewed initiatives will result in noticeable advancements in reducing plastic waste in both streets and landfills.
Utilizing plastic waste in road construction has been demonstrated to enhance the durability and lifespan of roads. Experts indicate that roads built with plastic-infused asphalt can endure for up to 10 years, in contrast to the typical 5-6 years for standard roads. The plastic mixture also aids in preventing potholes and cracks, rendering roads more resilient to varying weather conditions. This initiative not only addresses the problem of plastic waste but also plays a role in developing sustainable infrastructure within the city. By repurposing plastic waste, the AMC aims to create a more sustainable future.
