Trichy Corporation has revived a long-pending infrastructure requirement of the city to recycle construction and demolition (C&D) waste, by proposing to build a 100 TPD (tonnes per day) capacity recycling plant at Panjapur.
The plant, proposed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model will collect demolition waste from across the city to produce flooring tiles and pavement blocks.
With a surge in the development of new properties, the disposal of construction and demolition waste remains a challenging task. Although the corporation has earmarked around one acre of space in all four zones to dump the waste, it is often dumped on river banks and vacant plots.
Around two-acre space has been identified near the Panjapur STP, behind the integrated bus terminus (IBT). The plant will have a capacity to process 100 tonnes waste per day. The recycled products like paver block and flooring tiles will be either used by the corporation for its own projects or shall be sold in the market, officials said. The plant will work under the design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model.
“We had visited the construction and demolition waste recycling plant in Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) to learn about the working model. A suitable agency will be roped in to manage the plant after obtaining the approval of the council. Previous attempts did not materialise due to lack of interest among recycling plant operators,” a senior corporation official said.
The agency will collect, transport and recycle the debris for a price from builders and residents. Apart from protecting the waterbodies and vacant plots, the plant will help Trichy to improve its Swachh Survekshan cleanliness rankings. Officials said that the plant could be materialised in a year.
