Over 19,000 properties sealed for non-payment of taxes in Ahmedabad

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has sealed 19,732 properties in the city falling under various zones for non-payment of property tax. A notice has also been issued by the department for the recovery of taxes.

The department has also initiated an interest rebate scheme to reward property owners who pay their taxes on time and more than 2.26 lakh tax payers have benefitted from this.

Three days back, the civic body sealed 210 properties falling under the East zone, such as Viratnagar, Nikol, Gomtipur, Odhav, Vastral and Amraiwadi.

Earlier, the civic body had issued a warning saying that despite issuing the notices and sealing the buildings, if the owners of properties fail to pay their dues, then they will cut their water supply and drainage. Such properties can be seized and auctioned to recover the tax amount, said in a report.

The chairman of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s revenue committee, Jainik Vakil, said that the department has sealed the properties of those who have defaulted on property tax despite being served several notices.

The highest number of properties (4,023) were sealed in the West Zone, such as Navrangpura, Paldi, Naranpura, Vadaj and Sabarmati. Vakil said that around 3,285 properties were seized in the South West Zone, including Jodhpur, Vejalpur, South Bhopal, Sarkhej and Maktampura.The civic body sealed 316 properties for defaulting on taxes on March 17.
