The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is poised to enhance its sewage treatment facilities by establishing three new plants located at Appughar, Sagar Nagar, and Bheemili, in response to the increasing volumes of sewage.
Visakhapatnam presently produces 225 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, with 171 MLD being treated, while 54 MLD is discharged untreated into the ocean. The introduction of the new plants will contribute an additional capacity of 38 MLD, which will assist in minimizing untreated effluent and meeting the demands of local industries that require approximately 400 MLD of water.
The sewage treatment plants at Sagar Nagar and Bheemili are part of an agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), with an anticipated completion timeline of three years.
At this time, sewage from 41 drains is directed towards the sea—comprising 18 closed drains and 23 open drains. GVMC intends to convert 13 of the open drains as part of the IFC initiative and to upgrade the remaining 10, representing a significant advancement towards sustainable water management and improved urban infrastructure.
