The state highways and minor ports department has addressed the land acquisition challenges that had hindered the construction of the 1.3-km flyover connecting Tamukkam to Nelpettai, commonly referred to as the Goripalayam bridge, and has guaranteed its completion prior to January 2026.
This project, which has a budget of Rs 190.40 crore and features a width of 12 meters, received its technical approval on April 30, 2023, and was inaugurated by Chief Minister MK Stalin in October 2023.
Officials have stated that the flyover is being constructed in three segments: from Tamukkam ground to Thevar statue, a parallel structure to the existing AV Bridge extending to Anna statue in Nelpettai, and from Thevar statue to Sellur.
The complete flyover will consist of 61 piers and 62 spans. A representative from the Highways Department remarked, “There was a delay in securing land in the Tamukkam–Goripalayam section.
his issue has been resolved, and the project is progressing smoothly. We anticipate completing the structure parallel to the AV bridge by November.” The Sellur segment is expected to be finished by December and will function as a one-way route. Additionally, the project includes service roads and a vehicular underpass at the junction of Bibikulam and Gandhi Museum Road.
