A day after a minor gap was spotted on a pavement on the Cauvery bridge connecting Trichy mainland with Srirangam island, the state highways department on Monday began repair work to strengthen the bridge.
Officials said a concrete mixture would be applied on the gap surfaced on the pavement of the bridge and a chemical grouting process would be taken up to strengthen a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) handrail.
The state highways department maintained that a portion of the pavement and a handrail was damaged in an accident before Diwali.
“We will complete repair work in the next few days. The bridge is safe for vehicles and pedestrians,” said an official.Disturbance caused to strip seal expansion joints, which ensure smooth transition for vehicles between two adjacent decks on the bridge, has caused the linear gap.
It may be noted that ever since major maintenance work was completed on the Cauvery bridge at Rs 6.8 crore in March 2023, overspeeding of vehicles causes both fatal and non-fatal accidents.
