Railways approved electrification of Tiruvarur-Karaikudi section

A communique sent to the general manager of Southern Railway mentioned the nod given for the execution of electrification of the 122km section of Tiruvarur – Karaikudi which had already been included in the Pink Book 2023-24.

The ministry of railways has given its nod to carry out the process of electrification work on the recently gauge-converted Tiruvarur – Karaikudi section. The railway department is to carry out the process at an estimation of 143 crore under the ‘umbrella of electrification of the remaining un-electrified section’ scheme, officials said.

A communique sent to the general manager of Southern Railway mentioned the nod given for the execution of electrification of the 122km section of Tiruvarur – Karaikudi which had already been included in the Pink Book 2023-24.

The process will be done at a 1×25 KV traction system by the construction wing of Trichy railway division, a senior official said.

President of Pattukottai taluk railway passengers welfare association and member of (the divisional railway users’ consultative committee) DRUCC, N Jayaraman welcomed the announcement.

“We had already submitted a memorandum to the railway authorities in this regard and stressed the same during the DRUCC meeting. So, we extend our gratitude to the Souther Railway general manager and officials from the Trichy division for taking forward the long pending demand. We also appeal to the concerned authorities to accomplish the project on time to facilitate more trains to be operated for the benefit of hundreds of commuters,” he added.

The gauge conversion work of the 122km stretch was taken up in 2012 and completed in a phased manner at the end of 2018. In addition to the conversion work, 14 bridges, 262 small bridges new buildings at five stations, were constructed.
