Property tax slabs to be amended in panchayats

A proposal for amendment into existing norms of property tax recovery by panchayats has been put up by panchayat department in state.

Now if a villager owns a house worth Rs 50,000 then he/she will have to pay Rs 100 as property tax to the panchayat. A proposal for amendment into existing norms of property tax recovery by panchayats has been put up by panchayat department in state. Gazette notification for the proposal has been published and suggestions are being sought from stakeholders.

If the proposed amendment is approved, people holding residential land and building of capital value exceeding Rs 50,000 and below Rs100,000 will have to pay 20 paise(minimum) & 30 paise (maximum)/per Rs 100 of the value of property and on residential land and building having capital value of more than Rs 100,000, property tax will be levied at Rs 1 (minimum) & Rs 1.5 (maximum) per Rs 500 of the value of property.

For commercial land building and shops exceeding capital value of Rs 25,000 but not exceeding Rs 50,000 property tax of Rs 1 per Rs 500 value of the property & Rs 3 per Rs 500 (maximum) value of property could be charged by panchayats. Persons with disabilities, widows, deserters, will be exempted from commercial property tax rates.

“No new introductions or changes have been proposed in the norms that are already there in the existing Madhya Pradesh Gram Panchayat obligatory taxes and fees (conditions and exceptions) rules, 1996. Proposed amendments are only for existing rates or slabs and are aimed at making them more relevant today.

Like residential properties worth more than Rs 6000 were eligible for paying property tax as per old slab, now proposal is to revise it to properties worth more than Rs 50,000”, principal secretary panchayat and rural development, Uma Kant Umarao told TOI.

Proposed amendments also aim to revise the fee levied on sale of animals and cattle, like goat, buffalo, cow, calf, camel, pig etc.
