Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Tuesday initiated attachment proceedings against big house tax defaulters.
However, as soon as the proceedings were initiated against a hotel in Lahurabir locality, the defaulter paid the dues of Rs 6.25 lakh.
Similarly, an amount of Rs four lakh was paid by another defaulter soon after the attachment proceedings began.
Earlier, on the direction of municipal commissioner Akshat Verma, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation had served notices to defaulters. They were asked to clear dues or face attachment. The list of defaulters was also published in newspapers.
Meanwhile, the municipal commissioner, along with other officials took stock of sanitation and cleanliness in various localities, including circuit house, police line crossing, Maqbool Alam Road, Chowkaghat, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University main road, Lahuravir crossing, Piplani Katra, Kabirchaura, Maidagin, Town Hall and shelter home, Visheshwarganj Galla Mandi and streets of Kal Bhairav Ward.
The officials also inspected the community toilet near Visheshwarganj Galla Mandi.
It was found that the electronic POS machine was lying nonfunctional and the toilet was not cleaned regularly. The municipal commissioner imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the operator.
Health officer Dr NP Singh, regional sanitation inspectors and representatives of AG Enviro Company were present during the inspection.
