Property tax bills printed, but to be mailed after curfew

The city has 1.10-lakh bill payers in the residential and commercial segments. Sources confirm that 1 lakh of those bills are out of the press and the bills for commercial property in villages will be printed in another week.

Almost done with printing property tax bills, the municipal corporation will mail those after the curfew, so that people have time to pay.

The city has 1.10-lakh bill payers in the residential and commercial segments. Sources confirm that 1 lakh of those bills are out of the press and the bills for commercial property in villages will be printed in another week. An MC official said: “The paper exercise is almost complete because of the hard work of the tax branch. Filing will start after the curfew when people get their bills via post.”

The MC had earlier extended the payment deadline of last financial year’s bills by an indefinite period. This was done to support the lockdown, otherwise taxpayers would have crowded the payment windows and spread coronavirus. The actual deadlines were March 31 for the payment of arrears and May 30 for self-assessment, but both were relaxed.

Sources in the civic body said the Covid-19 scare had also caused procedural delay in tax collection, since it can now start only once this crisis is over. Of the 1.10-lakh property tax payers in the city, 85,000-odd are in the residential property segment, while 26,000 are in the commercial category.
