Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on Friday afternoon for a two-day visit to Assam, during which he is set to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for development projects exceeding ₹47,000 crore throughout the state.
Originally, Modi was scheduled to visit Kokrajhar in the afternoon before proceeding to Guwahati in the evening. However, this visit was cancelled due to heavy rainfall, as reported by officials. The projects intended for Kokrajhar, valued at over ₹4,570 crore, were unveiled virtually from Guwahati.
The Prime Minister was welcomed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, members of the state cabinet, and senior officials. In a post on social media, Sarma indicated that the visit would announce development projects totaling approximately ₹47,703 crore across the state. This marks Modi’s fourth visit to Assam in the last four months.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Kokrajhar projects encompass the launch of Assam Mala 3.0, a road infrastructure initiative worth over ₹3,200 crore, which will facilitate the construction of more than 900 kilometres of roads throughout the state. The programme also includes six road infrastructure projects within the Bodoland Territorial Council area, comprising four flyovers and two bridges, with an investment of around ₹1,100 crore.
Additionally, Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a periodic overhauling workshop for railways in Bashbari, located in Kokrajhar district. Three train services will also be inaugurated, including the Kamakhya–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, the Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Express, and the Narangi–Agartala Express.
On Friday evening, Modi is scheduled to participate in an event in Guwahati where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for projects valued at approximately ₹19,680 crore. These projects encompass the dedication of the Kopili Hydro-Electric Project situated in the Dima Hasao and West Karbi Anglong districts. According to the government, this project has been constructed at an expenditure exceeding ₹2,300 crore.
Additionally, Modi will dedicate to the nation the capacity enhancement initiative of the Numaligarh–Siliguri product pipeline and will inaugurate Phase 1 of the North East Gas Grid. Railway electrification initiatives covering the Rangiya–Murkongselek, Chaparmukh–Dibrugarh, Badarpur–Silchar, and Badarpur–Churaibari sections will also be dedicated to the nation.
Furthermore, the prime minister will lay the foundation stone for the Furkating–Tinsukia rail line doubling project and for cruise terminals at Bishwanath Ghat in the Biswanath district and Neamati in the Jorhat district. He will also inaugurate the PM Ekta Mall in Guwahati and distribute land pattas to workers in tea gardens. During the event, the prime minister will release the 22nd instalment of the PM-KISAN scheme to farmers nationwide.
Modi will spend the night in Guwahati and proceed to Silchar on Saturday. In Silchar, he is set to conduct the bhoomi poojan and inaugurate projects valued at approximately ₹23,550 crore, which includes the Shillong–Silchar corridor, a 166-km four-lane greenfield highway project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya.
Additionally, he will lay the foundation stone for an elevated corridor on NH-306 in Silchar and for a new College of Agriculture in Patharkandi, located in the Karimganj district.
